JAMES URBASKA James Urbaska has chosen to work with oil on linen. His muted images interpret the land around us with a soft palette creating tonal, atmospheric and poetic visions of the land. Born in Billings, Montana, Urbaska came to Vermont in the mid 1980’s. He currently resides in Newfane, Vermont with his wife and two children. After graduation from Wabash College, he apprenticed with a few, select professional artists. Urbaska has since developed a personal, reflective style of oil painting which is exerting its influence on the next generation of painters. Urbaska’s oils are exquisitely composed, subtle conversations between light and shadow. His is a topography, not of extravagance, but of restraint. The paintings create a feeling of luminescence; they glow from within and seem to contain their own light. Yet the central theme of his work is in the whole of the image and the emotions it evokes in the viewer; the total experience is more than the sum of its parts.
