Elizabeth Allen

Elizabeth Allen has always felt the urge to be a painter. After graduation with a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design, she spent a year in Rome studying the Italian masters. Returning to the U.S., she worked for Ralph Lauren in New York City during the day and studied at the Art Students' League in the evenings. She studied with several oil painters, including David Leffell, Ted Jacobs and Nelson Shanks.

Elizabeth works in the classic Florentine manner, from dark to light. Her work is influenced by the French Impressionists as is evidenced by her soft touch. While she prefers to work en plein air, she also spends a considerable amount of time in her studio working to capture the ethereal light so well evidenced in her paintings.

"I look for landscapes with unusual colors created by morning or evening light or distance. What excites me is capturing those colors, often in a lighting situation that lasts only a moment.

"I am not looking for an accurate representation of the scene as much as I want to interest the viewer with color, light, movement, temperature, atmosphere -- all elements that give us a sense of momentarily being there."

Elizabeth has won numerous awards in shows throughout the Northeast has been featured in two books by International Artist. She resides in Williston, Vermont with her husband and two daughters.
