Deidre Scherer Work In Fabric And Thread
Deidre Scherer studied painting at the Rhode Island School of Design. While raising her family in the 1970’s, she began to develop her distinctive, narrative approach to fabric and thread as a primary medium. In her work, Scherer has addressed the issues of aging and mortality by building a series of images based on elders and mentors in her community. Scherer’s work has been represented in over 150 shows nationally including solo exhibitions at the Museum of Fine Arts in Springfield, MA; the Everson Museum of Art in Syracuse, NY; the Brattleboro and Art Center; and the Baltimore Museum of Art in Baltimore, MD. Internationally Scherer’s work has traveled to exhibitions in Canada, England, and Japan. In 1996 she gave the keynote lecture at the National Festival of the Embroiderer's Guild in Durham, England. Her pieces are found in private collections worldwide and in public collections including the Baltimore Museum of Art; the Museum of Science in Boston, MA; and St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, NY. Many people have been introduced to Scherer's images through renowned book covers such as When I Am An Old Woman I Shall Wear Purple (Papier-Mache Press). In 1998, she wrote and designed her book Deidre Scherer: Work in Fabric & Thread (C&T Publishing). In 1994 Scherer received a Fellowship from the Vermont Arts Council. Having received a Fellowship from The Open Society Institute, she completed her series, Surrounded by Family and Friends, which opened at the Brattleboro Museum & Art Center in 2001 and continues to travel worldwide. Scherer and her husband live in Vermont where she works full time as a studio artist.
